Describe People in English: Appearance, Character Traits and Emotions

An adjective is a describing word, the main syntactic role of which is to qualify a noun or noun phrase, giving more information about the object signified.

In this lesson, we will learn useful Adjectives to describe people in three ways:

1. Describing someone’s appearance
Appearance is defined as the way someone or something looks.

For example

Beautiful (My younger sister is very beautiful.)

2. Describing someone’s character and personality
Character traits are qualities or characteristics that describe what a person is like. It’s important to be able to describe your own personality or someone else’s.

3. Describing someone’s feelings & emotions

Sometimes it’s hard to explain exactly how you feel. This vocabulary list helps you narrow down exactly what word best expresses your current emotional state.

For example:
Terrified (She looked at him with wide, terrified eyes.)
Exhausted (You look absolutely exhausted.)

The Idioms

Idiom: a manner of speaking that is natural to native speakers of a language

Every language has its own collection of wise sayings. They offer advice about how to live and also transmit some underlying ideas, principles and values of a given culture / society. These sayings are called "idioms" - or proverbs if they are longer. These combinations of words have (rarely complete sentences) a "figurative" meaning - they basically work with "pictures"

Family Tree

A genealogical chart showing the ancestry, descent, and relationship of all members of a family or other genealogical group.

·      Our genealogical tree will depend on how simple or how complicated we want to elaborate it, that is, we can include grandparents, parents, brothers and me, but if we want to detail it, it would be grandparents, parents, uncles, brothers, nephews, cousins, etc.

Let´s learn from our families...

History of the Culture

Culture is the characteristics and knowledge of a particular group of people, encompassing language, religion, cuisine, social habits, music and arts. The word "culture" derives from a French term, which in turn derives from the Latin "colere," which means to tend to the earth and grow, or cultivation and nurture.

·         For example, I will expose some historical facts of our country:

The first Flag of Panama: The Panamanian flag was designed by Don Manuel Encarnación Amador Guerrero and was made by Doña María De La Ossa de Amador. White represents peace to make a homeland in the new nation; the blue color represents the conservative party; the color red, the liberal party.

The Flag, was devised in October 1903. Once, the making of the National Flag was achieved and its acceptance, on December 20, 1903, was formally called as the baptism of this national emblem.

Leisure Time and Hobbies

·   Talking about our “free time”, we probably mean the time when we are away from work, university or college. A hobby can be part of our free time. Free time is not spent on things you have to do, like working, studying, running errands, housework, etc.

·  Many people do not start hobbies or enroll in leisure programs because they believe that it costs a lot of money, but the hobby or using our time is often spending it at home watching series, movies to relax or planning an outing with friends, family to know some place , go to the beach, movies, etc. and you don't necessarily spend a lot of money.

Comparatives and Superlatives

We use comparatives and superlatives to say how people or things are different. We use a comparative adjective to express how two people or things are different, and we use a superlative adjective to show how one person or thing is different to all the others of its kind.

For examples:

Yarubelis is taller than Leila.

Geraldine is the tallest.

Leila more sincere than Geraldine.

Yarubelis is the sincerest

Yarubelis is older than Leila.

Geraldine is the oldest

Comparisons

The definition of a comparison is the act of finding out the differences and similarities between two or more people or things.

For examples:

My dad is older than my mom.

The leopard is faster than the lion.

Pizza is more delicious than chicken rice.

Mango is tastier than orange.

Netflix series are more fun than Tv series.

International Food

International food allows us to know an essential part of other cultures and recognize different traditions between countries.

Food is one of the basic needs that humans seek to solve. Over time, humans have been discovering different ways to satisfy this need and different ways of preparing food and giving it a pleasant taste. These techniques took different paths in different regions and areas of the world.

Our favorite international foods...😋

What We Have Learned

His class has been very entertaining and fun due to the various topics that he has explained to us, and we must remember that as the world evolves we must prepare ourselves better and learning English is important because it is essential when it comes to finding work, English will give us access to a better education and therefore to the possibility of a better job. Our job opportunities will multiply as soon as we master the language. GERALDINE PORTOCARRERO

As teachers in a changing and increasingly modernized society.  English both in our teacher training and at the time of teaching it to children is a subject of great relevance and helps to a greater perception and active participation in society.  English is a window to many opportunities, and this course hand in hand with all the didactics and topics learned will help us to form a meaningful and permanent learning.  YARUBELIS CARRERA

This definitely has been an interesting subject to study because being so relevant, English is a language that can be learned fast, but only with the best methodology, and I may say that we have learned from the best teacher. My vocabulary has increased a lot since I take English classes. Also, I consider that I have become more creative due to the various activities that I realized with my classmates. Something I take with me are new dynamics for lessons and games, to apply with my future students. ELSY GONZÁLES

This year has been one of the most difficult since we had to adapt to a new modality but it did not prevent us from having a new teaching, his class has been one of the most interactive since I was able to improve my English a little and it is very satisfying to know in which we observe different very important and interactive topics. LEILA GOMEZ

Throughout all this process of having English classes I can say that I am truly grateful for my knowledge of the language. Thanks to Mrs. Cañenguez I have learned new strategies to not just teach English, but to create the student-teacher relationship that plays a major role in the correct teaching methodology for students. Another experience I take with me is beauty of learning from others because it has helped me to realize how many ways there are to solve a problem. Lastly, now I am conscious of how essential English is to open many doors around the world. ONEHIDID TEUCAMA
